Welcome

Why organise an international university tennis tournament?

First and foremost to promote the values of sport at university. What are these values? University sport contributes and favours students’ social and university integration, inter-cultural exchanges, and well-being, to prepare tomorrow’s leaders encouraging both academic and sporting excellence. All these objectives represent the qualities embodied by the French Federation of University Sport (F.F.S.U.) through the organisation of sporting events.

But why organise an international tournament in Poitiers?

Because it is the responsibility of the director of the CRSU (Regional Committee of University Sport) to lead with great dynamism and to promote University sport beyond regional and local contests. Not diminishing the importance of such events as they demonstrate the implication of teachers and students in their weekly practise. But they must be more often completed by the organisation of more exceptional events. As always, these events require our partners and staff to work together. Indeed local authorities, general and regional councils, leagues, committees and other clubs, bring their help and support; material, know-how, skill and enthusiasm. Thanks to them, university sport lead by our university staff and supported by the university, can host special events which contribute to students’ training and lives. On this occasion, people working on the project will unite, exchange, confront, and develop contacts through tennis. We expect our participants to endorse the values expressed in this foreword, which would be the best way to show gratitude to all the people working together to make this event an all-round success.

The Stade Poitevin tennis club is one of the oldest clubs in the Vienne region as it is almost 100 years old. Its 500 members use the 4 green-set indoor courts, 3 clay courts at the front of the club and 4 hard courts at the back. After a game, players can relax on the terrace or in the bar restaurant.

The Stade Poitevin Club wishes you a great Master’U tennis championship!

The Tennis Committee of the Vienne coordinates the educational, sporting and administrative initiatives of the Département.  It is also the organizer of the Vienne Women’s International championship – France’s 4th largest female tennis event -, which will take place from October 18 through October 26, 2008. The 3rd and 4th editions of the BNP Paribas Master U will be held on the same courts.

University sport -Tennis

The university can be proud to count amongst its community, athlete-students with exceptional careers who in most cases have the special ability to perform well academically and in sport.

The idea of this double excellence concept came to us naturally to give recognition to these outstanding men and women who give honour to French sport in general. A convention between the French Federation of tennis (F.F.T.) and the French Federation of University Sport (F.F.S.U.) was signed in 1994, to reinforce and encourage the development of tennis at university. The supervision and training of the French university team and the creation of National University Tennis Centres (C.N.U.T.) have allowed these students to successfully complete a dual academic/professional and sportive project.

The creation of the Master’U BNP Paribas championship in 2006 (with the sponsorship of the bank which “always sponsors tennis”), clearly illustrates the desire to develop meaningful projects which contribute to give university tennis the place it deserves.
